11/25 America East Game Thread
How was everyone's Thanksgiving? Hope no one is too hungover from their Turkey Day festivities because the America East has some good match-ups today. Let's take a look....
Stony Brook @ Northwestern - 1:00 PM
Boston U. @ Cleveland State - 2:30 PM (neutral location; Kingston, RI)
Navy @ Albany - 4:00 PM
A quick breakdown of today's action after the jump!
The Seawolves take on undefeated Northwestern, a team who just ran off three neutral court victories in the Charleston Classic to earn themselves the distinction of tournament champs. The Wildcats are led by a pair of 20+ point per game scorers in 6'9" senior John Shurna (21.5) and junior swingman Drew Crawford (20.8). The Seawolves will need to keep it low scoring to have a chance in this one as they likely don't have the offensive firepower to hang with a Northwestern team capable of putting points on the board (80+ on both LSU and Seton Hall).
The Boston University Terriers are in Rhode Island taking part in the Ticketcity Legends Classic and open their tournament up with a game against the undefeated Cleveland State Vikings. The Vikings, despite losing Norris Cole to graduation, opened their season in grand fashion with a big win over #7 Vanderbilt and have beaten solid mid-majors such as Kent State and St. Bonaventure since. They're led in scoring by senior D'Aundray Brown (16.3), however, four other players average between 7 and 11 points per game for the Vikings, so BU mustn't get too focused on any one player. Cleveland State hasn't allowed more than 64 points in any game this year, including 58 or less in three of the four. Boston U. could be in trouble if they can't breakthrough against the Vikings D. Darryl Partin will need to continue his scoring ways (22.7 per game), but it'll require the help of sophomores D.J. Irving and Dom Morris if the Terriers have plans of pulling off the upset (and yes, they are the definite underdog).
The "late" game pits the Navy Midshipmen against the Albany Great Danes. The host Danes are coming off a 20-point loss to George Mason, but look for them to amped up for their first home game of the season. Navy has dropped three straight against Siena, Quinnipiac and Tulane after opening the year with wins over Longwood and Division III Penn State-Altoona. The Midshipmen are led by J.J. Avila in scoring, rebounding and assists. The sophomore is averaging 12.2 points on 57% shooting. However, the real question is, who on Navy will stop Gerardo Suero? The junior has cooled off a bit since dropping 31 on #5 Syracuse, averaging just 13 per game against Monmouth and GMU.
Hopefully the conference can avoid a "Black Friday" of their own and not go 0-3. I have faith in Albany picking up the win, but the other two could be close as well. After all, SBU and BU are supposed to be upper echelon America East teams (which is akin to be the skinniest member of the Klump family). Perhaps they can show the conference has just been a bit unlucky and the Seawolves and Terriers can each pick up a quality win.

Lock
UA better be a lock. BU or SBU would be a great win against two teams that hope to make the tourney (hey, sbu could even play ncaa spoiler by knocking of nw)

The Klumps
It takes some true skills to put together a relevant and humorous Klumps reference

SBU vs. Northwestern
28-30 at the half; playing more like expected. Not shooting well, but offensive rebounding keeping them in the game.
red line upset! (RLU)
Hopefully they can hit a few from deep and pull this off!

SBU vs. Northwestern
Sounds like they are more than competitive, but lack of inside game (offensively) is hurting them. Offensive rebounding by Brenton/Joyner/Rapier is solid, but really no post game to speak of vs. taller bigs. They must hit 3’s to stay in the game; Dougher has to shoot better. Coley played well, but picked up 2 quick fouls. Nothing from Bracey; he’s a key, not only today but moving forward. Still, very encouraging for the AE, as Northwestern is a quality team, and should make the tourney this year….let’s see how 2nd half goes.
SB vs. Northwestern
Pretty good game for SB. Lost 63-58, in it all the way. Difference was in fouls. 21-10, resulting in 18 shot free throws to 5 for SB. Without a player to get into the lane and put pressure on the defense, it’s tough for SB, however, Joyner/Rapier played very well inside. This team out-rebounded a Big 10 team, which bodes well for them in league play…..Now, the AE needs BU to get a big OOC win!
chris martin...
His loss hurts so much. Jump started O last year and still no replacement even with timmy.
And BU also looking strong early!

BU vs. Cleveland State
BU up at the half 24-21…..Great chance for an OOC win! I still think it comes down to BU/SBU/UA/UVM in the AE tournament, which will be outstanding basketball. Let’s hope BU hangs on…….!
Couldn't agree more
It’s become increasingly clear that there are those four teams and everybody else. As it stands, I think SBU is the favorite with UVM close behind. BU and UA have some things to figure out.

BU
Up 6 with 13+ to play…..they (and the AE) need this win…..!
Let's go BU!!!!
I haven’t looked, but beating Cleveland St. might actually be a “bigger” win than Northwestern, no???
Either way, it’d be really nice for BU to hold and win this and then UA should hold serve at home and make it a much-needed 2-1 day.
Bigger than IF SBU would have beaten Northwestern
is what I meant.
BU
Would’ve really liked to have seen both win, but any win OOC is a good one! Northwestern has two really good players back, and ultimately SBU couldn’t match their talent. I think BU brings it home!

choke artists
Nice in ooc I can get invested in all 9 teams — and feel the agony nine-fold. What happened? Following on phone. How could he possibly turnover/foul

What did we do to deserve this??
Patrick Nero is no longer the Commish; Binghamton has a new president and AD; FakeWillBrown is still awesome; there are now two blogs dedicated to the conference…..we deserve better college basketball Gods!!!
Time to tune into albany game...
Common boys! Let’s not lose this all…

Albany
wins easily, Navy just not very good team. Both SBU and BU could’ve won today, with BU clearly letting one slip away. I wonder how this affects BU later in the season, as their guards are all returning players, and they’ve lost a couple close games that they should/could have won? Teams that get BU in a tight game late will feel like they have a chance, no?
matt griffin
Will have to read about what happened, but he’s usually a heady player and he’s hit some clutch shots… But he doesn’t belong on the floor athletically so I imagine that’s why he got in trouble. It looks like robinson was put in lineup over him — I wonder if this will hasten the decline of his meaningful minutes.

Matt Griffin
What happened at the end of the game; did he turn it over?
Hoping a BU fan will fill us in, but they were inbounding up 1 with 6 second left — and will 5 seconds left griffin had a foul turnover.

Such a tough loss
Thanks to Albany for avoiding the 0fer. Tomorrow looks like another 1-2 day, unfortunately.
